Sarah Nedovic’s READYMADE for Melbourne Design Week

This Melbourne Design Week, Marion welcomes READYMADE, a unique light installation by local artist, Sarah Nedovic. Having first established herself as a ceramic artist, Sarah now works across multiple mediums, investigating the intersection of materials, light and form.

Now hanging from the wine bar’s ceiling, READYMADE, is composed of three separate pendants in parallel. Each made by local Coburg North glass blower, Ruth Allen,  the manufacturing of these pendants is a nod to our building's industrial past, a crucial element in the design identity for Marion itself. Marion’s architect, Iva Foschia, who helped Sarah with READYMADE, wanted to create a wine bar that felt lived in and would wear the marks of our many guests over our lifetime. READYMADE is symbolic of this. Not only is Sarah’s design sympathetic to Marion’s space, but it’s also made from many wine bottles drunk and enjoyed by their guests this past summer.

As such, glass bottles have found a new life at Marion Wine Bar. As Sarah says. “this transformative process reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility, breathing new purpose into materials that would otherwise be discarded. What makes these fixtures truly exceptional is the circular process, a homecoming of sorts”.

READYMADE is perfectly imperfect as the handmade nature of the blown-glass pendants ensures they slightly vary. It’s an echo of Iva’s original vision, representing the alchemy of the way objects change as they are used over time, reflecting a timestamp of use. As Iva says, it’s this togetherness that simply can’t be “magicked into design.”

Next time you visit Marion, remember to look up to get the full view of READYMADE. Sarah’s installation will be present through the duration of Design Week, make a reservation before June 2nd to ensure you can drink and dine under the glow.
